Some additional modifications to the 3-4 set and this clutch pack prevent scoring and burning and increase hold. More friction plates than stock which is 6 in most cars and trucks. This is important because the clutch has to bear the load in every gear except reverse.įor the 3-4 clutch, we use 8 heavy duty friction and steel plates. They have superior temperature capabilities and they don’t burn easily, even in the worst conditions. These clutches have an outstanding friction coefficient for maximum holding. We use carbon composite friction plates in the forward clutch set. Now you have nearly double the load capabilities of the stock transmission in overdrive. That, accompanied with the 20 percent wider band, will let you tow in overdrive with confidence. This servo has more holding force than the stock overdrive servo. It will supply the clamping force needed for these heavy units without the excessively harsh shifts associated with the aftermarket “super servos.”įor Fourth (OD), we use the Proprietary Performance Billet servo. This servo is the largest servo available from GM.
To compliment this, we use the Corvette servo. We use a heavy duty wide band for maximum hold in second and fourth gear. These units feature a heavy duty, 13 vane pump with staked bushings, full-time lube modification to keep the heat down, and a modified lockup valve to improve the lockup converter’s durability so you can tow confidently in overdrive. The shifts on these units are designed to take the abuse and work associated with these vehicles, but without the tire chirping shifts of our race and performance units. These were specifically developed for commercial, heavy towing, and 4×4 vehicles.

Knowing this our XP1 series is much more than just a rebuilt 700R4. Sticky governors and warped valve bodies have been the leading cause of 700R4 failures. Loose tolerances around seals and gaskets have caused the unit to leak. Without an aftermarket cooler this transmission is prone to overheating. The original 700R4s small 27 spline input is not adequate to handle large amounts of torque. Throughout the years the 700R4 had its fair share of problems.

Also known as the MD8 or TH700R4 this unit was used in the 80s 90s and in the 2000s its still is used as an upgrade for Camaros, Corvettes and other sports cars that were originally equipped with one of the 700R4s predecessors. Hydra-Matic designed this 4 speed automatic for use in everything form Corvettes, Limos and Cadillacs to Suv's and Pickups. The 700R4 is one of the most versatile transmissions ever built.
